Top UK Crown Green Bowler to Defend Title at the Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal 2010

Gary Ellis of Manchester won the Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal 2009, where he received his trophy from world renowned golf Retief Goosen. Gary has now qualified for the 2010 tournament where he will be defending his title against other top crown green bowlers including Graeme Wilson, Dave Jackson, Noel Burrows, Darren Plenderleith and Colin Kelly.
Gary Ellis said, ‘I’m really looking forward to defending my title, and taking advantage of the fantastic facilities at Oceanico’s Amendoeira resort. This year, the competition is bigger and better, so without doubt it will be much harder to win this year. May the best man (or lady!) win”.
The Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal 2010 is from 9th to 16th October with 32 top crown green bowlers qualifying for the event: 16 county winners, as defined by the British Crown Green Bowling Association, and 16 winners of open tournaments. All other bowlers are invited to join the event, where they compete for a place in the last 64 against the 32 qualifiers and they will also bowl in the Taylor Bowls Trophy warm up competition.
The principal sponsor of the event is again the Portuguese Tourism Board (Associação Turismo do Algarve). Taylor Bowls (supplier of bowls products) and Auto Rent (car hire) are confirmed gold sponsors. The tournament will be televised by Sky SPORTS as seven individual one hour shows, covering the quarter finals down to the finals, and the overall champion will receive €2000. The winner of the Taylor Bowls Trophy will receive a week’s accommodation for two people at either the Amendoeira Golf Resort or the Belmar Spa & Beach Resort, both luxury Oceânico resorts.
In addition to bowling, all attendees are invited to the Oceânico Par 3 Challenge on the floodlit, 9 hole, par 3 Oceânico Academy course with world renowned golfers, and to The European Tour’s Portugal Masters golf event in Vilamoura from 14th to 17th October.
With so much on offer, there is great interest about the Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal 2010 across the UK, and more than 100 bowlers are anticipated to participate. Many bowlers are returning and this is no surprise to the organisers: as Gary Ellis stated in 2009, "It is very rare that bowlers are treated like VIPs but your competition did this from fantastic facilities and accommodation, to meeting some of the stars of world golf. Your generosity is appreciated by everyone".
The Amendoeira Bowls Club boasts the only natural grass crown green outside the UK, in addition to a flat green. The greens are situated next to the stunning clubhouse, which overlooks the two championship golf courses: the Oceânico Faldo Course and Oceânico O’Connor Jnr. course. The Amendoeira Sports Club is available to all guests, with its fully equipped gymnasium, six Savannah tennis courts, two five-a-side Astroturf pitches and beach volleyball. It also has a professionally maintained football pitch which Sunderland AFC, Aston Villa FC and the Football Association of Ireland’s ladies teams all used extensively during their warm weather training camps at the Amendoeira Golf Resort.
The package price for the Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal 2010 starts at €360 based on four people sharing a two bedroom luxury self-catering apartment, and includes all green fees, welcome drink reception, prize giving Gala Dinner and complimentary entrance to watch the Oceânico Par 3 Challenge.
The Amendoeira Golf Resort also provides luxury accommodation in spacious three bedroom villas. The two bedroom apartments are situated in private village complexes with large communal swimming pools and the villas have their own pools. In addition to the two championship golf courses, the floodlit, 9 hole, par 3 Oceânico Academy course is ideally suited to beginners and those wanting to improve their game.
